Resident photographer Nick Dibb gives us a tour of his quirky take on modern photography.
After several years of taking pictures of pretty much anything that caught my eye and a period spend at Leeds College of Art and Design destroying my clothes with developing chemicals, I decided to get serious and now study photography full time at Leeds Met University. Although my main areas of interest are music, fashion and portrait (or generally anything involving interesting people), I try wherever possible to incorporate a sense of humour or surreal-ness to my work. I guess this probably has its roots in both my own personality and my influences which pretty much includes every day dream I’ve ever had, stupid things that make me chuckle and basically the whole of popular culture from the 1950’s onwards.
If I had to pick a photographer whose work I admire and aspire to it would definitely be David Lachappelle. I wouldn’t say that I have a specific way of planning or researching my ideas before hand, preferring more to let things come to me as naturally as possible as I feel that this way my work is less structured and more spontaneous. I try wherever possible to get across the atmosphere of the situations and people that I photograph in my pictures; in fact I feel that this is a far more important part of any decent image than spending hours stressing over apertures and shutter speeds. I’ve so far produced work for a number of different publications, websites and businesses. I’m also very much involved in the Leeds music scene.
