David Lindsay demonstrates his skills with a polaroid…in Leeds City Market!
We took these photographs in Leeds City Market to document the social cliques that represent the area and to see how close we can get to the people within them. The portraits are about people letting down their protective barriers – we were curious to see how much a subject can give of themselves in a short amount of time and in a single shot. The images are shot on Polaroid film using a large format camera; this was a critical choice in the decision to create the series as we only allowed one shot per person and it also allowed the individual to view the image once it had been taken and gauge a reaction from them.
We envisaged our role to be more the mechanics behind the photograph as opposed to constructing the photographs through direction and posing, enhanced by the fact that it will be the people who really make the portraits themselves by individually owning the stage. The question has always been: how telling can a portrait really be about a person? It has been interesting to see how revealing a portrait can be about the people behind the camera depending on their role and level of intervention.
