Just a few miles further from Leeds lies the peaceful village of Chapel Allerton. But underneath its sleepy exterior, a thriving new culture exists. Nestling in the countryside it shares with nearby Harrogate, Chapel Allerton is becoming one of the coolest places to live in the region. The town is lauded for maintaining its tranquillity, even during the industrial revolution the village remained untouched, and became a desirable area for the wealthy to live. This has continued into the 21st century, with the area now often referred to the Notting Hill of the north. An influx of young city dwellers has created the hype that exists around the town today. A youthful and vibrant town, it perches between the bustling cosmopolitanism of Leeds and the glamour of Harrogate, without adopting too much of either.
The town has recently undergone much regeneration, and without losing its rustic charm it has taken on a slick bar and restaurant culture, with some of the region’s best watering holes conglomerating in the town. It makes for a discerning drinking crowd escaping the city for a bit of country chic.It can make for a relaxing day out, exploring the town’s antiquities such as the famous Snowflake toy shop and beautiful countryside, or an up market night on the tiles, with bars such as The Hub Bar and Bistro, a lively Friday night joint with a selection of good foreign beers, jockeying for position.Hype recommends that you: Visit the Seven Artspace art gallery, 31 Harrogate Rd.Go to the monthly Organic Farmers’ Market Organic Leeds at The Old Mustard Pot; Stainbeck Lane, on the second Sunday of every month.Grab lunch at The Old Police Station, Harrogate Rd.Finish off with a few drinks at Further North bar (formerly LS7) Harrogate Rd. |

Which is it a town or a village? the author seems unable to make up his/her mind. Probably because I think Chapel Allerton is struggling to do the same. Yes, it’s charming in places, but ’slick’ bar culture?!? A homogeneous mass of in your face, vertical drinking establishments, the type Headingley residents are rapidly blaming on the demise of their area, is a far cry from glitz and glamour.
Fortunatley Chapel Allerton is just about saved by places live ‘Seven’ and ‘Further North’, it’s just a shame that the other bar/restaurant owners weren’t in the same line when God was handing out imagination. Bear this in mind when all you discerning drinkers head north for your Friday night out…

Coming from Chapel Allerton myself, I would find the good 7 mile walk to the countryside a little stretching. Chapel Allerton is not a town, nor is it a village, its just a suburb about 3 miles from Hyde Park!
